Gold Serpent from Gørding
From 1 March. See one of the most impressive examples of Viking Age jewellery.
Measuring a mere 3.4 cm, it does not look like much. But the artistry of the goldsmith we see in this piece is of such high quality it can hold its own against the best jewellery from Denmark’s Viking Age.
It is possible that the piece was created in a workshop at the court in Jelling as a gift to a chieftain, with whom Gorm the Old and Harald Bluetooth wished to be on good terms.
This wonderful item of jewellery was found about 15 kilometres from Ribe and will soon be sent to the National Museum of Denmark.
